I think it would be more correct to say that not everyone uses document mode. I suspect using document mode explains your frustration.

You will find lots of recommendations from Mapleprimes users to use Standard (not Classic) with worksheet mode (not document mode) and with Maple Notation, sometimes called "1d math"  (not 2d-Math notation) . Others recommend Classic instead of Standard.

I have had the same problem for months now. Every time I want to login to Mapleprimes, I have to go through the "forget your password" routine. I get a new password, one-time password emailed to me, I login, change my password, and then next time I want to login, the same thing happens.

My first wish is to get rid of 2D input. Having two parsers is madness. I think 1D input makes the most pedagogical sense. 2D input looks cool to inexperienced users, but it is so bloated, especially when tensored with document mode, and learners seem to be perpetually stuck on interface matters.

A single interface that is not plagued with "gout" is truly desirable.

My second first wish is to have better LaTeX integration. Instead we seem to be pursuing a dream that the proprietary document mode will somehow replace professional standards. In order to get good graphs, I have had to learn to use either Matlab, which does allow LaTeX markup in graphs, or pstricks. Maple's export to postscript has only managed to get worse and burn bridges.

When you describe your benchmarks, you should state all of the interface ambiguities:

Classic or Standard?

If Standard, then worksheet or document?

 1D input or 2D?

Extended typesetting?

with animate, you have to click on the graph. Then a control panel menu will appear at the top.

Might I suggest the chili pepper as an appropriate symbol for the badge?

It seems to work on ratemyprofessor.com

Alec--of course you are correct on all points you make.

For educators like us, it's an impossible battle to make undergraduates feel comfortable with Maple when we have to constantly mitigate between the two input modes.

Time will tell if the mutation from 1D to 2D input is deleterious or advantageous.

Oddly enough, I have had the same impression for the last several weeks.

Honestly I have been waiting to hear the results of the Maple User Interface Survey. But I doubt this will ever be shared.

Doug mentions new energy at the beginning of the academic year. My experience has been that at my institution, I become exclusively  taxed fielding questions that can always be traced to 2D Math Input and/or Document mode. It has just become the same thing, year after year. Nothing has improved.

We set up out general access lab computers to start in Standard worksheet mode with 1D input. But whens students buy their own copy, or a new faculty member has a special installation on their office computer, the whole issue comes up all over again.

Instituionally, we need to decide if it continues to make pedagogical sense to use Maple in the undergraduate curriculum. Before about Maple 10, it was a no brainer. But now we never seem to get beyond interface issues.

"There's no there there" as Gertrude Stein said.

Can Maple13 solve this?

The computer I am at right now does not have Maple 13. It cannot be solved with Maple 12, but it can with Maple 10 and 9.5.

Who is in a position to compile this detailed list of mathematical features that users would most like to see implemented in Maple?  I think it must come only from Maplesoft, based on bug reports and surveys.

Here is but one example: after 9.5, Maple's "solve" was wrecked. My colleagues and I have reported this. Now we are up to Maple 13, and it is still buggy...so we must keep 9.5 installed for faculty who do research that involves solving even modestly large systems of polynomials.

Then of course all the nonsense and confusion with Classic, Standard, Worksheet, Document, 1D-input, 2D-input makes it impossible to get a common basis. I have used Maple for 15 years, and I just cannot stand either Document mode or 2D input. Even copy/paste in Standard with 1D-input/2D-output is still problematic. Often the paste burps up weird mathml or something that leads to yet more frustration. No wonder instructors have started to have second thoughts about introducing Maple to easily frustrated undergraduates in Calculus I and II.

Document  mode with 2D input, especially as the default start up, was the beginning of the end.
