Yes, the subscripted terms in my submitted worksheet are atomic.  I do that because I like to use and look at  subscripted terms.  If I don't make them atomic, then Maple thinks they are indices into an array.  I make them atomic by first typing the term, then Cntl+Shift+Underline+subscript character.  Atomic subscripts seem to work OK for everything that works for simple (nonsubscripted) terms.  Maple does not always simplify the expression even if it consists of all simple terms.  1D math does not support subscripts like 2D math does.

Thanks, I was doing the same thing, but I was using the right-button context paste instead of the control-V.  That makes all the difference.  Use only the control-V for this operation.
