I don't think this is the same thing as optimization, because I don't have an objective function. I think it's more analogous to a problem in communication theory, where given that I have 22 symbols, how can I optimally distribute them in a space of 5 dimensions to avoid single-bit flips, etc. Except here, I don't really know how many distint entities there are, I want to chop up the space to figure out the minimum number of divisions necessary to get to some level of accuracy.
