You're correct that in some cases the equation can be solved by Maple. The usual value for the parameters are

E=30*10^6, iner=8.3*10^-6,l=10,A=10^-2, u and q are varied.

For u>=3 with q=1, "Newton iteration is not converging" appears. I'm trying to use approxsoln and continuation but it seems that it's not easy to use them.
