I am using Maple and having the same problem with not being able to thicken the axes independently of the gridlines.

 

The solution posted above is 7 years old, and is totally inelegant and not becoming of a decent programming language.  Matlab's capabilities are far superior, and reflect the object-oriented design of Matlab itself.

 

I am guessing that the recent version of Maple (as of 2012) is written in an object oriented language.  If that is the case, the language scheme for Maple should have options and settings that reflect this.  In other words, it should be a very simple matter to thicken the axes, since the corresponding member of the "axes" object should be accessible from Maple commands (as is the case with Matlab).

 

I hope that I am wrong here, but the futility of my searches on this issue indicate that Maple should have better design.
