My current best workaround to this is the following:

$ode = maple("MathML[ExportPresentation](PDEtools[declare](prime=x): diff(y(x),x$2)(x)+$a*y(x))");

which strikes me as a touch heavy handed (not to mention expensive). Any improvements/advice/etc gratefully received!
