Sorry for being imprecise.  I did use the assignment operator.  I will look into the other functions mentioned.

Thanks for the response.

@Alejandro Jakubi

Thanks much for your response.  Your suggestion works for what I am doing.

@rlopez

Thanks much for your response.  As an observation, and not to be critical, I would say that Maple is not WYSWG with respect to equations within tables.

This might be an area for future improvement.

Frank

Thanks much for your response.  I also appreciate the link to the example worksheet.  However, it is not what I am looking for.  Maybe I can ask the question a bit more clearly.

Assume I have an equation such as f:=a*z^2 + b*w

If I take the partial derivative of f with respect to z I want to see:   2*a*z*z'

but maple (correctly) displays:   2*a*z

If I take the partial derivative of f with respect to w I want to see:  b*w'

but maple correctly displays:  b

To further complicate, say I have an equation of the form:

eq1:= a*z' + b*w'^2

I cannot take the partial derivative of eq1 with respect to "z" because maple does not recognize that "z" is an independent variable of eq1.  In the above case, I would like to see the following results.

partial of eq1 with respect to z:    a*z''

partial of eq1 with respect to w:    2*b*w'*w''

So far, no joy.

Again, thanks for the response.

Frank

I left out the following note.... When I uninstalled Maple10 (after installing Maple11), the watcom compiler was also uninstalled. I thought I could reinstall only the watcom compiler rather then the entire maple11 package. I selected a custom install, however, was warned that this was not a good idea and a "known problem" - so was forced to reinstall maple11 from scratch. Not a real problem, but certainly an inconvenience. FDJ
The install was fairly painless, but I do have a few complaints. There was nothing OBVIOUS in the documentation that indicates what will happen to Maple10 when you install Maple11. In my case, nothing happened and I had two versions of Maple installed on my system. I would rather have known ahead of time that Maple 11 would not uninstall Maple10, or at least have been warned that Maple11 would be installed alongside of Maple10. Lastly, I wasn't sure that uninstalling Maple10 after installing Maple11 would not some how break Maple11. Fortunately, it didn't. Regards, Frank DiJoseph
