Interestingly, the file can be recovered by opening it in Maple 14--works fine there, and if you make a minor edit and resave, it opens in 13.  I have not yet taken the time to see if the problem can be replicated by trying to resave in 13, and whether correcting pi vs Pi (this was common error in all the corrupted files) will prevent the file correuptions.

Yes, you are correct.  I checked with my students, and yes, the file became corrupted when they saved it, not while working in the file. Most likely in document mode since that is the default of the install.  Institution hardware.  Not enough data to answer your other questions.

What causes this, how can we prevent it, and can the files be recovered?  I'd prefer not to use Maple classic because I like the extras (eg palettes) available in regular Maple.  I have advised students to now use worksheet mode and Maple Text (control M), but it seems odd to be avoiding the very features that are assests to Maple.

Thanks!!
