Thanks, acer. This must be the issue. However, when using Maple for physics-related calculations, I would like to avoid this behaviour. beta represents some physical quantity, constraints on which may be strengthened as theoretical investigations proceed. In other words, there is only one quantity, throughout my notebook, that I call 'beta'. Is there an elegant way to work in this manner? Eric
