Thanks for helping out Paulina.

Thanks for the informative reply Paulina.

However, what confuses me is that when you do enter f(x):=2x*2 and Maple gives you the dialog box to choose what you mean, Maple doesn't say anything about a procedure (which I understood by now, is not the same thing as a function, in Maple?). It gives me an option: "Function definition", not "Procedure definition". So of course this means to me that f(x) is indeed a function of x.

If Maple doesn't really create a function it is confusing that it's called a function. Suggestions for next Maple update would be to make Maple able (no phun intended) to distinguish between functions and procedures so the smartplot would indeed work with f(x):=2x*2.

Sorry I forgot the : - I did enter f(x):=2x+2, and not f(x)=2x+2. And Maple then asked me if I meant it as a function definition to which I said yes.

I just don't get it. It doesn't work with f(x):=2x+2 (Maple doesn't create the smartplot), but with just 2x+2 it does. Whats wrong with plotting a function, Maple should be smart enough to know I want the right-hand side plotted when the only thing on the left if f(x)/y?
