Thanks - Your expl clarifies things for me. The Convert forces conversion of sin/cos to tan I assume. I would have thought the use of 'trig' in the simplify would have done that, but it doesn't.

that worked, but I am confused. Why does it not seem to simplify sin(x)/cos(x). Also why does it not know that arctan and atan are the same?
