Thank you for your comment, but that is why Ithe interval for alpha was < and >, and not equal to!  Also, limiting alpha to the positive domain gives one of two sheets, which ok.  What I am really interested in is letting v be any vector.  Assuming v to be an elementary unit vector is too limited.  

The vector is to be any vector, so the hyperboloid has any orientation.
